Canada: Day 5
The next morning we woke up to a homemade country style breakfast buffet. There were eight different juices to choose from, coffee, yogurt, fruit, and hot food served on glassware. I sat outside on the porch and felt like a princess. I’ll tell you what, I certainly ate well on this trip. After breakfast we headed over to Green Gables. We toured the house…it was so quaint. I loved these geraniums in the window. The sunlight made them look so happy. And Anne’s room was quite pretty as well. We walked through the barn and I “milked” the fiberglass cow. Then Leandra and I braved the haunted woods. As you can see we got a little scared…it is the haunted woods after all!
After we got “frightened” in the haunted woods we decided to take a walk down lover’s lane. There were beautiful bridges all along the trail. The greenery and flowers were enough to do any heart good. I could have spent a lot more time walking those trails…but as usual on this trip, we simply ran out of time.
The next stop was the Lucy Maud Montgomery homestead. There we saw a group of people gathered under a big white tent celebrating the 100th anniversary of Anne of Green Gables. We didn’t plan to be in Cavendish on the 100th anniversary of Anne, but it sure did work out nicely. They issued stamps in honor of Anne on this day and had pictures of the new stamps on the cookies and cake they served at the party. Several in our group crashed the party and enjoyed a cookie, including Leandra and me.
We grabbed lunch at a place called the Boardwalk. There were several stores there along with a few restaurants. We opted for Subway and then indulged in some Cow’s ice cream. Cow’s is a very popular ice cream shop on PEI…and it’s very tasty. The ice cream is made from an old family recipe that originated in Cavendish. I had Raspberry chip...yum, yum!
We headed over to Avonlea Village after lunch and enjoyed a live concert. Gilbert played the base guitar and Anne tapped danced. All the characters from Green Gables were at the village interacting with us. They did a little play for us…the scene where Anne breaks the slate of Gilbert’s head in the school room after he called her carrots because of her red hair. They also had a portrait studio where you could choose all kinds of old fashioned clothing, dress up, and they’d take your picture for free. Leandra and Mickey decided to dress up as Anne. I opted for some general clothing…but with puffed sleeves of course! We also took a little buggy ride while we were there. I enjoyed some Raspberry Cordial on the ride….no, not Red Current Wine…it really was Raspberry Cordial.
The entire group hadn’t been to the ocean yet, so that was our next stop. I enjoyed walking the shores again in a different location than we’d been the night before. I picked up a few more rocks and shells but decided to keep my feet out of the water this time. We had devotions overlooking the ocean that day…simply stunning. We parked on the cliff which was quite scary. We all envisioned the cliff caving in and the bus rolling into the ocean. Thankfully, that didn’t happen. I must say, our bus drivers really knew how to drive and get in and out of small parking lots. We joked it was one of their favorite things to do…driving into small areas just to show us how skilled they were. Really, I think they just couldn’t help the situation at times. It made for an adventurous ride, that’s for sure. Kudos to Mike, Buck, and Rich!
That evening Leandra and I enjoyed soaking in the hot tub…until our skin started looking like prunes. It was so relaxing and a perfect activity to do before boarding the bus the next day for our long journey home. Each evening the Inn has cookies and tea at 9 p.m. in the foyer. We decided to participate on this particular night and I’m so glad we did. I tried Mango Passion Fruit tea…it was scrumptious. It was fun to visit with my new friends over tea. As Claire says, tea makes everything better. I have to agree.
